Every first Sunday of the month, Tomar’s Municipal Market transforms into an open-air museum — full of stories for sale.

There is a kind of Sunday morning that only exists in cities with soul: the kind where the air smells of coffee, damp stone, and old things. In Tomar, that morning arrives on the first Sunday of every month, when the outdoor space around the Municipal Market fills with stalls, crates, and treasures laid out with an almost accidental generosity.

The Tomar Arts, Collecting and Antiques Fair is, for those who know it, far more than a vintage market. It is a ritual. A meeting point where collectors, curious wanderers, bargain hunters, and casual strollers brush past one another among furniture waiting for a new life, grandmother’s jewellery, vinyl records, ceramics, coins, illustrated postcards, and objects that have resisted being forgotten without quite knowing why.

“What turns up one week won’t turn up the next — and that’s exactly the charm.”

A fair with roots

The event is organised by ACAART — the Cultural Association of Craftspeople and Visual Artists of the Templar Region — and has been a regular fixture on the cultural calendar of the Tomar municipality. Over the years it has grown in attendance and reputation, becoming one of the largest fairs of its kind across the entire central region of Portugal.

Beyond the monthly edition at the Municipal Market, the city also hosts an annual International Antiques Fair — a larger edition that can bring together close to a hundred vendors from all over the country. Tomar has established itself as a genuine destination for anyone drawn to this world.

What you’ll find

The offering is as varied as it is unpredictable. Some people arrive with a list — a particular style of chair, a specific piece of faience, a set of stamps from a certain era. But most arrive with no plan and leave with something they didn’t know they needed.

Among the stalls you’ll find antique furniture, vintage jewellery and accessories, crockery and porcelain, second-hand books and rare editions, coin and stamp collections, old tools, radios and decorative objects, traditional crafts, and pieces with improbable histories — like the cast-iron fountain one vendor brought from the streets of Paris, where horses drank water a century ago.

Practical information

Entry is free. The only thing that might cost you is the willpower to leave empty-handed.
