Tomar is one of those rare destinations that rewards visitors in every season. Whether you’re after warm sunny days, lively festivals, peaceful walks through historic streets, or simply a good deal on accommodation, there’s a perfect time for everyone. Here’s what to expect throughout the year.
🌸 Spring (March to May) — Our Top Pick
Spring is when Tomar is at its most rewarding. The weather is comfortable, the gardens and parks are at their greenest, and the town is lively without being crowded. Temperatures climb from around 18°C in March to 24°C in May, and hotel rates are pleasantly affordable, hovering around €65–95.
Tomar’s weather is most enjoyable during March, April, May and June, making spring the sweet spot for exploring the Convent of Christ, strolling through the Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes forest, and wandering the historic centre without the summer heat or crowds. In May, the city also comes alive with cultural events — the Feira do Livro, academic week festivities, and Children’s Day celebrations.
☀️ Summer (June to August) — Festivals & Warm Nights
Summer is full of energy. July and August can be scorching, with highs often above 30°C. The walk up to the Convent is demanding in the heat, so bring water and sun protection — though the nights are cooler by the river, and festivals keep the town buzzing.
June is actually the gentlest summer month — warm and dry, with major events like the Floating Lanterns Festival on 13 June and the Book Fair in early June. July brings the spectacular Festa Templária (9–12 July), filling the city with medieval knights, markets, and entertainment. August is peak tourist season in Tomar, so expect more visitors and slightly higher prices — but also the most vibrant atmosphere.
Every four years in July, Tomar also hosts the legendary Festa dos Tabuleiros — one of Portugal’s most striking festivals, where women parade through the streets carrying trays up to two metres high, stacked with bread and decorated with flowers. If you plan to visit at this time, book accommodation well in advance.
🍂 Autumn (September to October) — Hidden Gem Season
Autumn is one of the best times to visit, with pleasant weather and the town less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed experience. September still feels like summer, with daytime highs around 27°C and an average of 8.8 hours of sunshine per day. October is slightly cooler and wetter but still very pleasant — and accommodation prices begin to drop noticeably.
This is the ideal season for slow exploration: long walks along the Nabão river, unhurried visits to the Convent and Castle, and long lunches in the town’s family-run restaurants.
❄️ Winter (November to February) — Quiet & Affordable
Daytime highs in winter average around 12°C, with nights dropping near 5°C. Rain is most frequent in December and January, but clear days offer a beautiful contrast of blue skies and the Convent hill wrapped in mist. Rooms are at their cheapest, often €50–70.
Winter is perfect for travellers who want Tomar almost entirely to themselves. The historic sites are peaceful, the local restaurants are unhurried, and the town has an authentic, everyday character that gets harder to find in high season.
