Tomar with Kids in One Day

Tomar with Kids in One Day

Share Article

Tomar is one of those Portuguese towns that is large enough to impress, yet small enough to explore in a single day—even with children in tow. Between castles, riverside walks, and charming squares, there’s plenty to keep both kids and adults entertained. Here’s the perfect itinerary for a fun family day in Tomar.

Morning: Explore the Convento de Cristo

Start your day early at the Convento de Cristo, the magnificent Templar castle and monastery overlooking the town. While it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in history, don’t let that put you off if you’re travelling with children. The thick castle walls, round towers, and the famous Charola (the Templar’s circular church) are sure to capture young imaginations.

Turn your visit into a treasure hunt by looking for the monastery’s famous Manueline window, decorated with ropes, shells, and coral-inspired carvings. It’s a fun challenge for little explorers.

Tip: Arrive when the monastery opens at 9:00 AM to avoid both the crowds and the summer heat.

Late Morning: Wander Through the Historic Centre

Walk down into the town centre through the park and take your time exploring Tomar’s charming historic streets. Quiet squares, colourful buildings, and small local shops make it an enjoyable stroll, even with a pushchair.

Stop along the way for a refreshing drink or a traditional Portuguese pastry at one of the many cafés.

Don’t miss the Synagogue of Tomar, one of the oldest preserved synagogues in Portugal. It’s small enough for a quick visit and offers an interesting glimpse into the town’s rich history.

Lunch

Tomar has plenty of family-friendly restaurants throughout the historic centre, many with outdoor seating. Choose a terrace overlooking one of the town squares so the children can stretch their legs between courses while you enjoy a relaxed lunch.

Afternoon: The Nabão River and Mouchão Park

After lunch, it’s time for some outdoor fun. Mouchão Park, a small island in the middle of the Nabão River, is one of the best places in Tomar for families. Children can enjoy the playgrounds while parents relax under the shade of the trees.

Afterwards, take a leisurely walk along the riverbanks. You’ll pass historic watermills and traditional waterwheel structures, while ducks and swans often provide extra entertainment for younger visitors.

Late Afternoon: Castle Walls and Playground

If everyone still has some energy left, take a short walk up to the castle walls above the monastery. The panoramic views over Tomar and the surrounding hills are well worth the climb and make for a perfect family photo.

Near the entrance park you’ll also find a playground where children can burn off the last of their energy before heading home.

Evening: Ice Cream by the River

Finish your day the Portuguese way—with an ice cream on a riverside terrace while watching the sun slowly set behind the hills surrounding Tomar. Our favourite ice cream shop: Gelatomania Tomar
